Sri Lankan history could be divided into two sources - literary and archaeological sources. Deepavansaya and Mahavamsaya are considered mainstream literary sources of Sri Lankan history. Among the archaeological evidence the inscriptions retain a vital role. Like literary sources inscriptions too indicate the history of a country in shards. Archaeological experts piece them together to get a glimpse of a bygone period. Sinhala inscriptions have been found in Polonnaruwa Dambadeniya and Kandy periods. In Sri Lanka the inscriptions have never been confined to Sinhalese. Inscriptions in Pali and Sanskrit have also been discovered. Sarathchandra Amaratunga’s book focuses on inscriptions in Sanskrit which will be a resourceful guide for piriven examinations of Sri Lanka.
