A romantic work of prose found in Sanskrit literature Kadambari was penned by Banabhatta during the first half of the 7th century CE. The author however did not live to see the completion of the work. It is said to have been completed by his son Bhushanabhatta. The work consists of two parts - Purva Bhaga (earlier part) and Uttara Bhaga (latter part). The Sinhala translation is a collective editorial effort of Nagoda Ariyadasa Seneviratne Venerable Meegahathenne Sumana Nayaka Balangoda Sobhitha and Akuratiye Vimalawansa Theras. The Sinhala edition also contains a comprehensive introduction by Dr Abayaratne Adikari about Sanskrit literature. Nagoda Ariyadasa Seneviratne is an author of over 20 books on classical literature. Each paragraph of the Sanskrit work is in the form of poetry. Each paragraph is given Sinhala word to word meanings preceded by the order of the Sanskrit words. The annotations are quite resourceful for a student of Sanskrit language.
