According to the scholars the Thisara Sandesaya was written during the Gampola era, when Gampola was the capital of Sri Lanka. This is considered as the first Sandesha Kavya which provided precedence to number of Sandesha Kavyas written later in the literary history of Sri Lanka. This text edited by V.D.S. Gunawardena is an annotated edition designed for students and other readers alike. It opens with an explanatory preface of the contents and conforms to the standard norms of editing classical Sinhala texts. Thisara Sandesaya contains one hundred and ninety(190) verses. Each is followed by standard annotations, a rendering in prose style, explanatory clarifications, extended comments where relevant, grammatical constructions and relevant details of prosody adverted in the verse. Explanations are extensive and this text would more suitable for advance students.
